Can a SSR be a SCR Controller?
Q: I recently reviewed the documentation for the HS259DR + PMP2450WP and noticed something that raises a concern regarding whether this device is classified as an SCR or SSR, since it is frequently referred to as an SSR. Is it an SCR?
The answer is these are both SSR and SCR Controllers as the terms are not mutually exclusive.
SCR is referring to the main switching device. Commonly used as an AC switch (Solid State Relay, Solid State Contactor, or SCR Controller), or in rectifiers
SSR is referring to a simple semiconductor based switch with some integrated gate drive & protection circuit. different types can use, SCR (AC outputs only), IGBT (DC or AC outputs), or Mosfets(DC outputs only)
Older SSR's used Triac technology rather than SCR's and many large brands still use those although they are far less reliable.Â
SCR = Silicon Controlled Rectifier. Also referred to as a Thyristor
The main element if the SSR is an AC switch on the output as illustrated below.

PMP2450WP is SSR package with integrated SCR controller, using SCR's as the main switching element.
