You need a voltage reference to determine direction of current flow for AC sources.

How do Current Transformers Sense the Current Direction In AC systems?

The answer is simple, they can not:

-You need a voltage reference to determine direction of current flow for AC sources.

-You can not get directional information without both current and voltage connections and some smarts. Generally only a power transducer or kWh/KW power meter can do it.

If using only a CT you will only get AC output so there is no way to know. With voltage & Current information it can sense the phase difference which is 90 Deg C Resistive loads.

The best way to check a CT orientation is to connect it to a submeter and see which way the current is flowing
